Last Sunday, the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) held its 6th parliamentary elections in order to elect its 33 MP’s. With 102.034 registered voters and 72.296 votes (a turnout of 70.6%, higher from last election’s 69.2%), the pro-presidential parties retained its control over the parliament. The Free Motherland Party received the 47,35% of the votes, the Artsakh Democratic Party (European Free Alliance associated member) received the 19.01%, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation the 18,81%, and the opposition parties Movement 88 and National Renaissance received the 6,93% and 5,38% respectively.

International observers coming mainly from European Union countries verified that the poll was held in accordance with international standards. Unfortunately, despite this transparent, non violent, fully democratic and exemplar elections, most western countries didn’t recognise them. In an official communicate, the EU said that “In the light of reports about ‘parliamentary elections’ in Nagorno-Karabakh on 3 May we remind that the European Union does not recognize the constitutional and normative frameworks in which they are held. These procedures cannot define the future status of Nagorno-Karabakh and influence the negotiation process”

The European Free Alliance Youth, as the sole EU youth organisation that fully stands for the right to the self determination, states:

1. That the European Union must recognise the right to the self determination of the Artsakh Republic. The peaceful and democratic path is the sole solution to this conflict, and Azerbaijan will have to accept the right of Artsakh citizenship to free decide its national future.

2. That the European Union must recognise the Republic of Artsakh as an independent and sovereign state. Last Sunday elections showed that NKR democratic and freedom values fully comply with the European standards. The European Union cannot turn the blind eye to this full democratic election, while accepting Azerbaijan’s non democratic elections as valid.

3. The we congratulate EFA’s associate member the Democratic Party of Aksakh for their results and we are looking forward for a full international recognition for the Republic of Artsakh.
