Today on the 25th of November we recognise the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
One of the most devastating human rights violations, violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today.
The theme of the campaign for 2017 is “Leave no one behind: end violence against women and girls.” EFAy supports the UNiTE Campaign’s commitment to a world free from violence for all women and girls around the world, while reaching the most underserved and marginalized, including refugees, migrants, minorities, indigenous peoples, and populations affected by conflict and natural disasters, and members of the LGBT+ community, first – the women who are statisically proven time again to be the ones who suffer the most at the hands of gender based violence.
Gender inequality persists worldwide and we all have a part to play. We all behaviours to unlearn. We all should make achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls a conscious part of our lives – in both the banal and the ordinary and in public spheres including legal frameworks and policy, to counter deeply rooted gender-based discrimination that often results from patriarchal attitudes and related social norms.
