Next Station: Catalan 21-D elections!

On 27th October 2017, Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Primer Minister, called for snap elections in Catalonia, as well as ceasing the Catalan President and all the Catalan Goverment. We must take into account that the Catalan Statute states that it is only in the power of the Catalan President to call for elections and dissolve Parliament. Rajoy implemented these measures in virtue of article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which a clear attempt to withdraw Catalan institutions’ powers.

Even though we denounce the abuse of power that this situation represents, we have decided that we will participate on these elections. We will participate in order to show, once again, that independence wins in the ballots. Every time that we have voted about independence (be it a referendum or plebiscitary elections), the options for independence have won. In this occasion, there will be three pro-independence lists: one being the one of Esquerra Republicana (where there are JERC candidates), Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia, President Puigdemont’s list) and the CUP-CC list.

Esquerra Republicana (ERC) list will include former social-democrats dissidents, in an attempt to mobilise all those former socialist voters who feel disappointed with PSOE and PSC neoliberal and unionist policies. Also, ERC list will include many civil society independents, such as former Catalan Parliament and Assemblea Nacional (ANC) President Carme Forcadell. Regarding the fact that Oriol Junqueras, current ERC President and candidate for the presidency, is now in jail, ERC Secretary General Marta Rovira, is likely to become the first woman President of Catalonia, and we hope, of the new Republic! Last but not least, ERC electoral list will be composed by 50% man and 50% women, becoming one of the first parties to achieve a gender balanced list! More than ever before, we are determined to win and give legitimacy to the Catalan Republic!
